From our foundation in 1979, Longmire has steadily built a reputation as an authority on men's formal wear through commitment to style, design and the very highest level of quality and workmanship in our cufflinks, shirt studs and dress sets. No gentleman can consider himself fully dressed for formal events or parties without a pair of cufflinks to give a finishing touch his outfit. The perfect pair will complement other accessories such as watches and belt buckles; and this is referred to this as “metal matching.”

Metal matching 101: how to match your cufflinks to your watch case and belt buckle.

For a polished finish, it’s best to keep your metals consistent - a straightforward rule that makes all the difference.  Let's use cufflinks as the reference point (naturally).

When wearing yellow gold cufflinks, such as our classic double stirrup 18ct gold design, it is best to coordinate your other accessories accordingly. Choose a watch, jewellery and belt buckle in a similar golden hue to create a balanced and considered look.

The same principle applies to rose and white gold: aim to match your metals as closely as possible for a refined finish.

If you are wearing sterling silver cufflinks, opt for stainless steel or other silver-toned accessories, such as belt buckles and watch casings. Finally, consider the finish as well as the colour - matt cufflinks are best complemented by matt belt buckles and watch details for a cohesive overall effect.

In addition to the metals, consider also the colour of belts and leather watch straps. Depending on the colour of these you might consider gold or silver cufflinks. Navy blue, emerald-green and burgundy (even pastels shades!), pair beautifully with either sterling silver or white gold, while earthier colours (think olive green), look good with yellow gold.

Also, consider the colour of your shoe leather. Brown shoes generally pair best with yellow gold or rose gold cufflinks. Black shoes and belts, meanwhile, are given added gravitas by white gold (our blue sunbeam 18ct white gold cufflinks are particularly beautiful), and sterling silver - such as our hallmarked silver enamelled double oval design collection.

Metal matching matters, of course - but so does matching your cufflinks to the occasion.

Occasion Guides: "What to wear to a Black Tie Gala vs. a Boardroom Pitch."

Next time you’re at a meeting or a black-tie event, try a little game: see how many silk knot cufflinks you can spot. They certainly have their place - perfect for summer parties, outdoor gatherings, fancy barbecues, or a relaxed day out boating. But for a formal occasion, an important meeting, or black tie? That’s when a really refined pair of cufflinks really comes into its own.

Conversely, diamond-encrusted cufflinks are often best saved for evening occasions, where their brilliance and sparkle can truly shine.   And shine is what a black tie gala demands, so think diamonds, emeralds, rubies and mother of pearl.

Our onyx and mother of pearl 18ct white gold cufflinks are an impeccable choice, as is our champagne diamond square design in 18ct white gold, exquisitely set with diamonds for a truly extravagant finish. Also worthy of consideration are our emerald-set square cufflinks, like wise crafted in 18ct white gold, offering a magnificent statement of timeless refinement.

The boardroom requires a more understated, yet equally sophisticated look. Perhaps choose our bespoke cufflinks, which can be hand-enamelled or engraved to express confidence and panache, or our basket weave 18ct yellow gold cufflinks, exuding timeless simplicity and understated elegance.
